1. Fall Fishing
South Padre Island in the fall is the perfect place for fishing, ideal for everyone from the casual fisherman to fishing enthusiast. In fact, the fall is considered one of the best seasons for fishing on SPI. With the milder temperatures and gentler weather conditions, fall on SPI is a beautiful time to be on the water, and you won’t have to deal with summer fishing competitions. During the fall, fishermen can catch redfish, kingfish, and snook, or charter a fishing boat for deep-sea fishing.
If you wait until the winter for your SPI adventure, don’t worry, there will still be fishing opportunities available. There just might not be as many fish around, and the available fishing changes. Winter species include flounder, black drum, and sheepshead.
2. Duck Hunting
Fall and winter are duck hunting season on the waters of South Padre Island. If you’re looking to get out in nature for some high-quality hunting, you can’t go wrong with a visit to South Padre Island in the fall.
While no hunting is allowed on the actual island itself, you can hunt for ducks in the Laguna Madre, the lagoon found between SPU and the mainland of Texas. SPI has plenty of options for you to choose from for duck hunting, from guided tours to rentals.
3. Hiking
Beyond hunting and fishing, there are plenty of other ways to connect with nature on the island. South Padre Island is home to a variety of different nature trails, sanctuaries, and refuges for you to explore. In the fall, you’ll be treated to SPI’s mild weather and vibrant wildlife. Winter on SPI is still mild, only slightly colder, making it a great option for hiking. You can explore the island along the Laguna Madre Nature Walk, or feel the power of the Gulf of Mexico with the Isla Blanca Jetty path.
4. Explore the Water
Of course, South Padre Island is most known for the fun you can have on the waters that surround it. With the Gulf on one side and the Laguna Madre on the other, there are countless ways to explore the waters of SPI. You can go on guided tours or rent your own boat for a more hands-on experience. In the fall, you can still swim to your heart’s content thanks to SPI’s lovely weather. The beach on SPI is a great spot to get away, all year round.
