Each airline has its own specific guidelines when it comes to carry-on luggage, and it can get very confusing trying to keep each one straight.
At Valley International Airport, we want to give you a complete guide to carry-on luggage for each airline to make your travel experience a smooth one.
Southwest Airlines
When flying with Southwest Airlines, you are able to bring one carry-on bag and one small personal item.
Your carry-on bag must fit within the dimensions of 10 x 16 x 24 inches, and your personal item should be no more than 18.5 x 8.5 x 13.5 inches and be able to fit under the seat in front of you.
For the safety of yourself and airport employees, make sure that any sharp items are safely covered and stored in your carry-on bag. Examples of personal items that are allowed on the aircraft include:
- Laptops
- Food containers
- Camera bags
- Briefcases
- Purses
American Airlines
American Airlines allows 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item.
Your carry-on bag should be no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches and your personal item should be smaller than 18 x 14 x 8 inches.
When checking in at the airport, your carry-on bag will be placed inside a sizer before you are able to bring it on the plane. It is important to note that if your carry-on bag does not fit in the overhead bin, you may need to check it.
United Airlines
Most flights with United Airlines permit you to bring 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. However, Basic Economy tickets can only bring one personal item.
The dimensions of your carry-on should be no bigger than 9 x 14 x 22 inches and your personal item should fit within the dimensions of 9 x 10 x 17 inches.
In addition to a carry-on and personal item, you are allowed to bring the following items aboard the aircraft:
- Jacket
- Umbrella
- Reading materials
- Additional food and merchandise bought in the airport
- FAA-approved child car seat
- Diaper bag
- Breast pump
- Camera
- Pet carrier (you may be charged extra for in-cabin pets)
Frontier Airlines
When flying with Frontier Airlines, you do have to pay for your carry-on bags, and the price varies depending on the time of purchase.
Your carry-on bags should be smaller than 10 x 16 x 24 inches and weigh less than 35 pounds.
Your personal items are free with the purchase of your plane ticket and should be no larger than 8 x 18 x 14 inches and fit underneath the seat in front of you. Additional items you can bring on the plane free of charge are:
- Coats
- Diaper bags
- Canes and crutches
- Portable oxygen concentrators
- Respiratory devices
- Assistive devices
- Foot rugs used for prayer
Viva Aerobus
With Viva Aerobus, each passenger is given one free personal item no matter their fare or combo they have purchased. The personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you and fit within the dimensions of 18 x 14 x 8 inches.
If you purchased the light or extra combo, you can bring a carry-on along with your personal item as long as both items weigh less than 22 pounds combined.
If you choose the smart combo, you can bring two items that weigh no more than 33 pounds.
No matter the combo you have chosen, your carry-on bag can be no larger than 55 x 40 x 25 centimeters.
If your bag is larger than the dimensions given, you will need to check it to your final destination. There are instances where the plane has limited space and your flight attendant will check your bag free of charge.
Sun Country Seasonal Flights
Sun Country Airlines lets passengers choose between a handful of baggage options while purchasing their tickets.
Passengers have the option to change and upgrade this choice after they’ve reserved their seats or while at the airport. However, the longer you wait to change your baggage option, the more expensive it’s likely to be, with purchases at the airport having the highest price.
Baggage options include:
- Under Seat Items — able to fit beneath the seat in front of you, these bags should be no larger than 17 x 13 x 9 inches. This baggage option is complimentary on all Sun Country flights.
- Overhead Items — fitting in the overhead compartments, these bags should be no larger than 24 x 16 x 11 inches and no more than 35 pounds. This option is available to passengers who select it in their flight options.
- Checked Bags — no larger than 62 inches in each dimension and weighing no more than 50 pounds, checked bags may be subject to additional charges.
Oversized and overweight bags can cost passengers an additional $20 to $100. Certain flights may not be able to accommodate an oversized bag, so it’s best to check before arriving at the airport. Each baggage charge is applied per person, per bag, each way, and is also non-refundable.
