(July 23, 2013) HARLINGEN, Texas – Valley International Airport (VIA) just became easier to navigate. With the implementation of indoor Google Maps, travelers no longer need to rely on signs and maps throughout the airport to find the easiest route to their gate or locate the nearest restroom or restaurant.

Google Maps seeks to simplify passengers’ travel experience by providing an in-depth view of an airport’s floor plan, pinpointing travelers’ locations and guiding them through the terminals with ease. Google Maps uses GPS capabilities coupled with publicly available Wi-Fi signals to enable smartphones to determine important details like floor level, restroom locations, the names of retail shops and restaurants, and more.

“VIA is dedicated to creating a seamless and pleasant experience for its travelers,” Valley International Airport Aviation Director Michael Browning said. “With Google Maps, VIA travelers are now able to identify precisely where they want to go within the airport by simply accessing the information through their smartphones.”

Travelers who enjoy taking their time in the airport can peruse shops and restaurants with the security of knowing they will be able to find a quick route to their gate before takeoff. Passengers can obtain indoor Google Maps for VIA with the Google Maps app for Android smartphones and tablets, as well as iPhone and iPad.

Indoor maps for airports continue to be added to Google Maps all over the world, with only a handful of airports in Texas. By taking advantage of this consumer friendly technology, VIA continues to distinguish itself as one of the most innovative airports in the state.

Along with Google Maps, the airport has also upgraded its website by removing Flash to make the site compatible with iOS mobile devices, adding a convenient search function, increasing Spanish-language content, adding more relevant photography, and reorganizing the site structure to group information in a more user friendly manner.
